THE DUC DE BERRY AND HIS GLORIOUS HOURS SHIRLEY P SMITH FRSA, BA Hons History of Art Wednesday 15 November 2017

The Très Riches Heures of the Duc de Berry is regarded as the finest 15th century illuminated manuscript.  A jewel-like collection of secular and religious images, it is not only a fine example of the International Gothic style of painting which swept through Europe in the early 15th century but also gives us a wonderful insight into life at one of the most glittering courts of its day.

Yet they were painted at a time when Europe was embroiled in what is known as the 100 years war and frequent outbreaks of the plague could decimate the population.  My lecture will study this beautiful manuscript, its patron, the Duc de Berry and its artists, the Limbourg Brothers both as a work of art but also as a reflection of society at that time.
